Depart Christchurch and travel across the Canterbury Plains, the largest area of flat land in New Zealand. Climb the foothills of the Southern Alps over the top of Burkes Pass before descending into the Mackenzie Country. Pause at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Twizel and follow the shoreline of Lake Pukaki before entering Mt Cook National Park where a stop is made for lunch (own expense). After lunch continue through Omarama and through the Kawarau Gorge to Queenstown, arriving late afternoon.

Fiordland offers numerous natural attractions, including the famous Doubtful & Milford Sounds. Gateway to the Fiordland National Park, Te Anau, a small settlement on the shores of the largest of the Southern Lakes, is the main staging post for excursions to Milford, Dusky and Doubtful Sounds. Known as the "Walking capital of the World”, with over 500 kilometres of walks. Lakes and rivers offer excellent fishing for brown and rainbow trout.

Your Doubtful Sound adventure begins as you cruise the crystal-clear waters of Lake Manapouri a stunning lake renowned for its numerous islands and deserted beaches. Then it’s over Wilmot Pass, on one of New Zealand’s remotest and prettiest sub-alpine roads, stopping along the way to experience some of Fiordland’s densest rainforest and to view Doubtful Sound glistening far below. On reaching Deep Cove, you will board the Patea Explorer our spacious catamaran, for a three-hour cruise that takes in the most dramatic scenery of Doubtful Sound. Our nature guides provide an engaging commentary and point out highlights. Keep a look out for wildlife as bottlenose dolphins frequently swim alongside our vessel, fur seals bask on the rocks around the fiord and rare penguins can at times be observed.

Return to Queenstown on conclusion. Picnic lunch is included today.

Today is free to enjoy the many leisure pursuits.

From luminescent blooms to subtle pastels, treat yourself to a feast of nature in Queenstown during spring. Clear, glacial-fed rivers swell in spring, making rafting and jetboating escapades an exciting option. Queenstown is the birthplace of commercial jetboating and braided rivers provide fantastic water adventures.
